Local non-profit organisation D’Bréck has announced it will host a debate on the European Union’s enlargement at 19:00 on Thursday 12 November 2026 at the Centre sociétaire Cents (167 Rue de Trêve).
The event, moderated by founder and President of D’Bréck Athanase Popov, will ask “Can the European Union continue to function without betraying its founding purpose if it stops expanding?” and will feature contributions from Amela Skenderović (Luxembourg–Montenegro), Inna Yaremenko (Ukraine), Erlir Puto (Albania) and Snežana Balašević (Serbia).
The organisers said the growing protectionist sentiment does not do justice to the desire of European peoples to be part of a shared geopolitical space. Some have been cut off from Western Europe as a result of disputes and wars between empires.
What will further enlargement mean in institutional terms? Montenegro is expected to join in 2028. What do we know about this small country? What contribution will it make to common policies?
Additionally, the event will ask:
• Can Ukraine realistically join the EU in the near future?
• How far has Albania's accession bid progressed?
• Is Serbia on the right track following the latest parliamentary elections?
The debate will take place in both English and French and admission is free.
Seating will be limited and attendance can be confirmed by emailing: dbreckletzebuerg@gmail.com
