The Automobile Club Luxembourg (ACL) has announced it is participating in Sécurité Routière (Road Safety) Asbl’s annual “Lights and Tyres” road safety campaign, which begins on Monday 12 October 2026.
The campaign focuses on winter safety and offers drivers a free check on the condition of their car’s tyres and lights. During the checks, the technicians of the ACL-Diagnostic Centre will evaluate the profile of each tyre and inform motorists of its status, age and if its wear is uneven.
In Luxembourg, winter tyres are mandatory in case of winter conditions (ice, packed snow, slush, ice or frost plates) throughout the year and the ACL reminds drivers that the law stipulates that the minimum tread depth must be 1.6 mm. For safety reasons, the ACL recommends that winter tyres with a tread depth of less than 4 mm should no longer be used. Below this limit, they are less effective on snow.
The ACL will also perform checks on each vehicle’s lights to ensure they are performing correctly (dipped beam, main beam, fog lights, driving lights, position lights, number plate lights, reversing lights and indicators). They will also check the condition of the reflectors and headlight lenses.
The ACL said: “With the arrival of autumn, the days get shorter, visibility decreases and driving conditions become more demanding. Properly functioning and correctly adjusted lighting, as well as suitable tyres, are particularly important for safe driving.”
The ACL highlighted that last year's results confirm the usefulness of these checks. In 2025, 5,749 vehicles were inspected. More than one in four vehicles, or 26.5%, had at least one fault. Specifically, 16% of vehicles had incorrectly adjusted dipped headlights, 6% had at least one defective bulb and 4.5% were fitted with non-compliant tyres.
