CFL Announces 2nd Phase of Summer Works Affecting 4 Rail Lines

On Monday 10 August 2026, Luxembourg's national railway company, the CFL, announced details of the second phase of its summer maintenance and modernisation works, which will affect four railway lines from mid-August to September.

The works will concern lines: Luxembourg – Wasserbillig – Trier; Luxembourg – Ettelbruck – Troisvierges – Gouvy; Luxembourg – Thionville – Metz; and Luxembourg – Esch-sur-Alzette – Rodange.

According to the CFL, the summer period, when fewer passengers use the railway network and more replacement buses are available, allows it to carry out maintenance and modernisation works while continuing to ensure railway safety.

In cooperation with its German and French partners, the CFL has organised replacement bus services during the closures. Around 200 drivers will operate almost 1,000 replacement bus journeys per day on average during the summer works. Passengers may also use RGTR and TICE bus services.

Luxembourg – Wasserbillig – Trier

No trains will operate between Luxembourg and Germany from Monday 24 August to Sunday 20 September 2026 inclusive.

Between Luxembourg and Igel, trains will be suspended from Monday 24 August until 04:00 on Monday 14 September 2026. Replacement bus lines L30, L31, L32, L33 and L34 will operate on different sections between Luxembourg, Wasserbillig and Trier.

From Monday 14 to Sunday 20 September 2026, trains will resume between Luxembourg and Wasserbillig with adapted timetables and a reduced service. RB87 trains will not operate during this period, while RE11 trains will run between Luxembourg and Wasserbillig according to an adapted timetable.

Train services between Wasserbillig and Trier will remain suspended until Sunday 20 September 2026 inclusive, with replacement buses continuing to operate.

The works include the renovation of the railway bridge at the Luxembourg-Germany border in Wasserbillig, carried out by the CFL in cooperation with DB InfraGo AG. Works will include removing and reinstalling tracks, repairing the structure, renewing waterproofing and drainage systems and restoring natural stone masonry.

The CFL will also renew 11.4 km of track, replacing around 19,000 sleepers and 7,000 tonnes of ballast. Further maintenance will take place between Wecker and Roodt.

Luxembourg – Ettelbruck – Troisvierges – Gouvy

No trains will operate between Ettelbruck, Troisvierges and Gouvy from Monday 24 August until 02:00 on Monday 14 September 2026. Services between Kautenbach and Wiltz will also be suspended during the same period.

Replacement buses L14, L15, L16 and L17 will serve the affected routes.

The CFL will completely renew tracks between Cinqfontaines and Troisvierges, replacing 5.2 km of rails, 4,300 sleepers and 11,500 tonnes of ballast. A further 1.1 km of track will be renewed between Kautenbach and the Paradiso stop.

The closure will also allow the CFL and its contractors to secure rock faces along the Northern Line. Metal safety nets will be installed over a distance of 300 metres to prevent rocks from falling onto the tracks. Repair, maintenance and cleaning works will also take place at several stations and stops.

Luxembourg – Thionville – Metz

As previously announced, trains between Luxembourg and Thionville remain suspended until Sunday 23 August 2026 (inclusive).

Replacement buses L90, L91 and L92 are operating between Luxembourg and Thionville, with additional services during peak hours. A dedicated replacement bus service is also available for TGV passengers travelling via Metz.

The CFL advised passengers travelling between Thionville and Luxembourg to allow approximately 45 minutes of additional travel time due to possible road traffic disruption.

Luxembourg – Esch-sur-Alzette – Rodange

Train services between Luxembourg and Bettembourg remain suspended until Friday 14 August (inclusive).

From Saturday 15 to Sunday 23 August (inclusive), no trains will operate between Luxembourg and Esch-sur-Alzette or between Noertzange and Rumelange. Replacement buses L60, L61 and L62 will operate, while passengers travelling on the Rumelange – Noertzange route can use RGTR and TICE services.

Train services between Bettembourg and Volmerange-les-Mines will also be suspended from Saturday 15 to Sunday 30 August (inclusive), with replacement bus L63 operating every 30 minutes.

The summer works will include further progress on the Howald interchange, where the CFL will install two 24-tonne escalators per platform and complete work on the platform canopies. The entire Howald interchange, including the bus station and tram stop, is scheduled to enter service in the final quarter of 2026.

Work will also continue on the new Luxembourg – Bettembourg railway line, which is scheduled to enter service from September 2027. The closure will allow the CFL to carry out works on a final 250-metre section near Bettembourg railway station, as well as drainage, power supply and signalling works.

The railway company will also renew tracks between Livange and Berchem, including 1.28 km of rails, more than 1,000 sleepers and 1,800 tonnes of ballast. A further 450 metres of sleepers will be replaced between Bettembourg and Dudelange.
