On Tuesday 1 August 223, Luxembourg's Ministry of National Education, Children and Youth, together with the Centre for the Luxembourgish Language (ZLS), announced that the travelling exhibition "D’Lëtzebuerger Sprooch(en)" (Luxembourg language(s)) can be seen in Troisvierges (Elwen) from 5 - 9 August 2023.
The exhibition will be at the Cultural Centre (20 rue de Binsfeld) and will be open every day from 14:00 to 18:00, with the ZLS team on site to guide visitors through the exhibition which aims for people to familiarise themselves with the Luxembourgish language and languages in general.
After the presentation of the exhibition on 29 June 2023 at the Abbaye de Neumünster, its first stop was from 12 to 22 July 2023 at the Belle Etoile shopping centre. After the visit to Troisvierges, the traveling exhibition will continue to travel to Miedernach (3 to 9 September 2023), to the Forum Geesseknäpchen (29 September to 4 October 2023) and to the Institut National des Langues Luxembourg (INL, from 23 October to 10 November 2023). Further stops are also planned.
About the exhibition
The title of the exhibition "D'Luxembourg language(s)" is deliberately modest and should reflect the complex language situation in Luxembourg. On the one hand, the title naturally refers to Luxembourgish and its development. The exhibition deals with the varieties that exist in Luxembourgish. The Luxembourgish language is not a monolith, but flexible, creative and in constant change. On the other hand, the multilingualism that constitutes Luxembourg is thematised. It is also an integral part of the linguistic environment in which Luxembourgish moves and evolves.
Participation is strongly encouraged.
The new mobile exhibition deals with the following topics: multilingualism, linguistic varieties, history, language change, Luxembourgish in literature and in the media. More specifically, the following aspects are examined in three stations: Multilingualism in Luxembourg; What is Luxembourgish and how does the language work nowadays?; and How is a language made? In addition to audiovisual exhibits, the exhibition also offers participative elements, in which one can participate in part via one's smartphone.
Four modules in four languages
The traveling exhibition consists of four modules that can be folded up and take up an area of around 120 m². The texts are in four languages - in Luxembourgish, German, French and English - so that knowledge of Luxembourgish is not a prerequisite to be able to follow the exhibition.
