On Tuesday 21 July 2026, Luxembourg Airport officially opened its new reception lounge for passengers with reduced mobility in the presence of Luxembourg’s Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Yuriko Backes, and Minister for Family Affairs, Solidarity, Living Together and Reception, Max Hahn.
The event, also attended by Chief Executive Officer of lux-Airport, Alexander Flassak, Info-Handicap Director, Christine Zimmer, and Gilio Fonck, Advisor at Ministry of Mobility and Public Works and Chairman of the Board of Directors at lux-Airport, saw the opening of the new facility, which is designed to provide a welcoming, functional and purpose-built environment for passengers requiring assistance, allowing them to benefit from dedicated support before their journey.
Situated on the ground floor of the airport, directly opposite the check-in desks and next to the security entrance on the right of the check-in area, the lounge features open entrances, spacious seating, a reception area and office, toilet facilities and a quiet room, as well as screens for guests to monitor departure and arrivals.
Lux-Airport detailed that the design of the new lounge is the result of close collaboration between the airport operator, stakeholders from Luxembourg's aviation sector and its social partners, and draws on the expertise of those involved, with careful consideration made for the needs of passengers with reduced mobility and in line with the recognised best practices in accessibility.
Addressing those in attendance, Alexander Flassak noted that lux-Airport was the first company in Luxembourg to join the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower initiative and has introduced training for its staff in relation to assisting passengers and visitors with non-visible disabilities. He said: “We are delighted to officially inaugurate today this new space dedicated to welcoming passengers with reduced mobility, as well as unaccompanied minors, at the airport. This facility marks another important step in our commitment to making air travel increasingly accessible, welcoming and inclusive for everyone, including people with disabilities, whether visible or invisible.”
Alexander Flassak added: “We hope this initiative will inspire many other organisations in Luxembourg to make similar commitments, so that together we can continue building an environment that is increasingly inclusive, accessible and welcoming for all.”
Alexander Flassak also revealed that the airport will introduce corresponding facilities on the “air side” of the airport following an assessment and receipt of feedback about the inaugural lounge.
Minister Backes remarked: “A truly modern transport system is one that excludes no one. This new lounge for passengers with reduced mobility reflects our shared ambition to make accessibility a practical reality, ensuring that every traveller can begin their journey with confidence, independence and dignity. Beyond enhancing infrastructure, this project demonstrates our determination to guarantee equal opportunities and access to mobility for everyone, without exception.”
Minister Hahn added: “Building a more inclusive society requires sustained commitment and continuous effort across every area of public life. Every improvement in accessibility strengthens the independence of those concerned and helps create a fairer society in which everyone can participate fully. Removing barriers benefits not only people with disabilities, but society as a whole.”
Following the speeches, the ministers and guests were given a tour of the facilities by lux-Airport Terminal Supervisor, Belinda Muvara, before an official ribbon cutting ceremony took place in front of the lounge entrance.
