On Wednesday 22 July 2026, the Grand Ducal Police issued a warning in relation to a rise in fraudulent phone calls, where a recorded message was played claiming that an arrest warrant had allegedly been issued against the person being called.
The Grand Ducal Police said they had received an increasing number of reports from people who have received such fraudulent phone calls and emphasised that such requests do not correspond to the procedures used by the police, the judiciary or any other public authority.
In this type of fraud attempt, criminals generally seek to obtain personal information or banking details, or to persuade the victim to make bank transfers or hand over valuables.
The Grand Ducal Police noted that this scam frequently involves the use of so-called “Caller ID spoofing”, which makes it possible to display false telephone numbers. Victims may therefore be led to believe that they are receiving a call from a Luxembourg mobile number or an official authority, which is not the case.
They advise that to avoid becoming the victim of such a call and fraud, please follow the advice below:
• never give personal information or data to unknown persons;
• be suspicious of calls that pressure you to react quickly;
• if in doubt, contact the relevant authority or institution through the usual communication channels to verify whether it is a scam;
• never comply with such demands and do not attempt to call the number back; instead, hang up immediately.
In this regard, the police ask everyone to inform and raise awareness among elderly people in one’s surroundings about this type of fraud.
