Luxembourg Steps Up Security Response Following Drone Sightings

On Saturday 19 September 2026, Luxembourg's Interministerial Drone Assessment Unit provided an update following the temporary suspension of flight operations at Luxembourg Airport after unidentified and unauthorised drones were sighted over Findel the previous evening.

The meeting followed the temporary closure of Luxembourg Airport on Friday 18 September 2026 evening after unidentified drones were sighted over Findel. Nineteen flights were diverted before operations resumed at approximately 01:20 on Saturday following safety inspections.

Luxembourg’s Prime Minister Luc Frieden subsequently convened Luxembourg’s Minister for Defence, Mobility and Public Works Yuriko Backes and Luxembourg’s Minister for Home Affairs Léon Gloden, together with the relevant authorities and services, to assess the situation.

Speaking after the meeting, Prime Minister Frieden described the presence of potentially larger drones in Luxembourg's airspace as a new security issue for the country, although he noted that neighbouring countries had already faced similar incidents.

"We are confronted with something new for Luxembourg, the presence of potentially bigger drones in the Luxembourg airspace," he said, adding that the authorities were working with neighbouring countries and international partners.

"We cannot at this moment analyse exactly where these drones are coming from," he added.

Asked whether the drones could have been launched from within Luxembourg or from abroad, Prime Minister Frieden declined to provide details for security reasons, noting that the country's security services were investigating and sharing information with partners and neighbouring countries.

The government similarly stated that the information currently available did not allow definitive conclusions to be drawn. The competent authorities are continuing to analyse the information collected and carry out checks in close cooperation with international partners.
