Fifteen municipalities in Luxembourg have received the European Energy Award Gold this year.

On Thursday 6 and Friday 7 November 2025, cities and municipalities from Germany, France, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Austria and Switzerland were awarded the European Energy Award (eea) Gold in the Valais resort town of Saas-Fee, Switzerland. The award recognises cities and municipalities that have demonstrated a strong commitment to achieving net-zero climate targets for many years. The ceremony takes place as part of the annual two-day eea Gold Event.

The highlight of the event was the presentation of the European Energy Award Gold awards during a gala dinner at the Hotel Walliserhof on Thursday evening.

To date, over 1,800 European municipalities with approximately 77 million inhabitants have participated in the European Energy Award programme. Gold status is awarded when a municipality has implemented more than 75% of the possible measures to increase energy efficiency and protect the climate.

This year, 58 European municipalities received the European Energy Award Gold (23 from Switzerland, fifteen from Luxembourg, seven from Austria, six from Germany, six from France and one from Liechtenstein) - 29 of which were honoured in person at the awards ceremony in Saas-Fee.

The largest award-winning city present in Saas-Fee was Lyon, with a population of 521,000. The smallest municipality was Putscheid in northern Luxembourg, with 1,177 inhabitants.

A total of 261 municipalities across Europe have so far received the European Energy Award Gold.
