The Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall (Mullerthal nature park) has announced a series of events as part of the "Mount vum Bongert" (Month of the Orchard), an initiative that celebrates orchards and local products.

The nature park noted that orchards form part of the region's cultural and natural heritage, with fruits from the "Bongerten" having long been used for a variety of purposes. Even today, local producers transform the fruits of the orchards into high-quality regional products (apple juice, brandies, cider, etc.). Since 2020 the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall has organised an annual "Mount vum Bongert”, an initiative which offers the public an opportunity to discover Mullerthal's meadows and orchards from different angles.

Culinary highlights

During “Mount vum Bongert”, various restaurants in the region offer menus based on regional fruit and refined products made from it. These special menus are available at Dimmer restaurant in Wallendorf-Pont (from now until Sunday 22 November), Reilander Millen restaurant (from Thursday 1 to Sunday 18 October), A Schulesch restaurant in Heffingen (from Tuesday 6 to Friday 16 October) and Gruber restaurant in Steinheim (from Thursday 8 October to Monday 9 November).

On Friday 30 October, from 19:30 to 21:30, there will be a tasting of quality spirits, accompanied by a visit to the Weber-Walch distillery in Reisdorf. Together with distiller Pit Weber and spirits sommelier Paul Thill, you will be able to taste a variety of spirits and learn interesting facts about distillation. Registration is available at naturpark-mellerdall.lu.

The École du Goût of Luxembourg’s three nature parks is offering a cooking workshop for children aged six to twelve on Tuesday 3 November from 14:30 to 17:00. On the menu: recipes featuring delicious pumpkins, crisp apples, juicy pears and mysterious aromatic herbs, sourced from their own garden and the region’s traditional orchards. Variety exhibition

In the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall region, 138 different varieties of apples have already been recorded – demonstrating the diversity of the region’s traditional orchards. The Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall will provide an overview of this varietal diversity on Saturday 10 October as part of the apple juice festival (Vizfest) in Echternach. At the market square, visitors will be able to discover different regional apple varieties and learn more about the importance of traditional orchards, as well as about the possibilities for maintaining and planting trees. On this occasion, the Natur- & Geopark Mëllerdall will also provide information about relevant services and ongoing projects in the region.

The information stand will be open from 10:00 to 18:00. At the same time, the apple juice festival (Vizfest) organised by the Guides & Scouts of Echternach will take place in the market square.

Interactive trail on the theme of traditional orchards

In the municipality of Reisdorf, an interactive trail dedicated to fruit trees and traditional orchards is available until Saturday 31 October. Along this approximately 7 km route, children and adults can tackle questions and challenges about the history of traditional orchards. The rally can be started individually at any time using the Actionbound app. Please note the questions are available exclusively in Luxembourgish.

The starting point is at the former Reisdorf railway station (6, Route de la Sûre), where there is a map of the route and the QR code required to start the rally.
