Tuesday 23 September 2025 marked the start of the new academic year at Luxembourg's National Institute of Languages (Institut National des Langues Luxembourg - INLL), with a record 8,300+ learners enrolled.

As reported by the INLL and Luxembourg's Ministry of Education, Children and Youth, the language school now offers courses in thirteen different languages.

Courses and locations

For the autumn semester, the INLL is offering more than 550 language courses for adults across its three sites: INLL-Glacis, INLL-Belval and INLL-Mersch. The temporary site at the National Health School (ENSA) in Strassen will remain in use this semester due to ongoing renovation work at the Lycée Robert Schuman and the relocation of students to INLL-Glacis. 25 language courses have been relocated there.

New languages: Arabic, Korean and Japanese

In addition to the Luxembourg's three administrative languages (Luxembourgish, German and French), the INLL offers courses in English, Chinese, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese and Russian. Recently, it also launched beginner courses in Arabic, Korean and Japanese.

The A1-level Japanese and Korean classes will run across the full academic year (from September to July) due to their linguistic complexity, with lessons offered in a blended learning format. The classes will provide the foundations, both oral and written. The A1 Japanese course was fully booked within a short time, which the authorities said reflected the growing interest in this language. Arabic courses are available at two levels: A1 and A2.1.

Expanding staff and access

To expand its offer and create more training spots, the INLL has recruited new instructors for the English, German, Arabic, Chinese, Spanish, Italian, Luxembourgish and Russian departments this semester.

Adults, who are not a beginner in the target language, wishing to enrol in a course (subject to availability) must complete an online test and attend a guidance interview to determine their recommended level. Orientation interview appointments can be made throughout the school year via https://myinl.inll.lu/.

Launch of "Moving Languages" training courses in Luxembourgish and French

The "Moving Languages" pilot project, launched by the INLL in collaboration with the Adult Education Department (SFA), has entered a new stage with the launch of the training programme for those interested in becoming "Moving Languages" trainers. Both sessions offered this semester are fully booked, with 30 students enrolled in French and 30 in Luxembourgish.

This national project, previously known as "Liela in Luxemburg," is a joint initiative of the Education Ministry, the INLL, the SFA and Liechtenstein Languages (Liela).

"Moving Languages" is based on an active, interactive method that enables students to acquire basic language skills in just eight weeks. The programme includes three hours of classes per day, focused on comprehension and oral production.

New training course for adult language educators

In addition to the Zertifikat Lëtzebuergesch Léiere Léieren (ZLLL), which is aimed at individuals wishing to train or further their skills as Luxembourgish language teachers in the field of adult education in municipalities or in a state-subsidised field, the INLL has added a second training course to its offer: the Certificate in Teaching Languages for Professional Purposes (Certificat d'enseignement en langues à visée professionnelle - CELVP).

Its aim is to train participants to teach professionally oriented language courses to adult learners in the field of adult education. It takes place (as with the ZLLL) in a blended learning format: 50% of the courses are offered online, asynchronously, and 50% in person, for a total of 120 hours divided into three modules.

The reported objective of this training course is: to understand and apply the principles of andragogy and communicative didactics for teaching professional languages; to master the linguistic, sociolinguistic and intercultural foundations related to professional communication; and to design, plan and evaluate andragogical sequences in professional languages.

This first session began with nine participants.

Certifying Luxembourgish spelling skills

In November 2024, the INLL added the Zertifikat Lëtzebuerger Orthografie (ZLO) to its catalogue of certifications and tests. Developed with the Zenter fir d'Lëtzebuerger Sprooch (ZLS) and the Luxembourg Centre for Educational Testing (LUCET), this official standardised test assesses Luxembourgish spelling skills and certifies them with an official document. The test is taken on a tablet and includes 90 questions, randomly selected from a catalogue. So far, 32 candidates have registered for the test.

New Luxembourgish language projects

To address ever-growing demand, the INLL confirmed it is exploring new opportunities to make Luxembourgish language educational resources available to as many people as possible. These include the development of a free self-learning platform for Luxembourgish, with a focus on professional settings such as healthcare, childhood and informal education sectors. The platform is expected to launch during the 2025-2026 academic year.

Meanwhile, the free platform for learning Luxembourgish, LLO.lu, will undergo a revamp by 2026, aimed at making it more interactive, with a focus on pronunciation. The LLO.lu platform, launched in September 2022, now counts more than 108,000 registered users - up 27,500 since September 2024.
