On Thursday 18 June 2026, the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce reported that following three years of mixed results, Luxembourg has risen to fourteenth place among the world’s most competitive countries according to the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) World Competitiveness Yearbook 2026.
Following previous rankings of 20th and 23rd, the Chamber of Commerce said: “This renewed competitiveness marks Luxembourg’s exit from the middle tier of the ranking and its return to the top fifteen, in line with its performance prior to 2023.”
The Chamber of Commerce, the institutional partner for Luxembourg in the IMD, detailed that this improvement is largely explained by a rise of 29 places in the “Economic Performance” pillar, enabling the Grand Duchy once again to rank ahead of countries such as Germany, Canada and Australia.
The Grand Duchy is one of the few European economies to have improved its position, while Switzerland (3rd), Denmark (6th) and Sweden (9th) have lost ground to Asian economies, with Singapore returning to 1st place in the ranking, followed by Hong Kong in 2nd place. In this context, the Chamber of Commerce said Luxembourg’s progress contrasts with this trend and confirms its recovery after several difficult years but stressed that this renewed competitiveness should be viewed with some caution, as it is based on international investment, which is inherently volatile.
