On Tuesday 14 October 2025, the Laboratoire National de Santé (LNS; national health laboratory) officially inaugurated a Computed Tomography (CT) scanner within its Department of Legal Medicine.
The inauguration took place in the presence of Martine Deprez, Luxembourg’s Minister of Health and Social Security, and Elisabeth Margue, Luxembourg’s Minister of Justice.
This new device enables comprehensive and systematic documentation of deceased individuals prior to autopsy, directly within the LNS. With 3D (three-dimensional) reconstructions, it facilitates examination planning and enhances the forensic accuracy of findings, particularly in cases where autopsy assessments are complicated by the condition of the body, according to the LNS.
The event concluded with a technical presentation and live demonstration of the scanner, offering guests an insight into its advanced capabilities and its integration into the LNS’s forensic workflows.
Dr Guy Berchem, President of the LNS Board of Directors, noted: "On behalf of the Board of Directors of the LNS, I would like to express our deepest gratitude to the High Commission for National Protection (HCPN) and the Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL) for their valuable support. Thanks to their generosity, this scanner now finds a new purpose in serving science and justice, by strengthening the forensic expertise capabilities of our institution."
Dr Thorsten Schwark, Head of the LNS Department of Legal Medicine, added: "With this state-of-the-art equipment, our department strengthens its international standing in post-mortem imaging."
