On Thursday 26 February 2026, the Health Directorate of Luxembourg's Ministry of Health and Social Security published its weekly overview of the evolution of major acute respiratory infections, including influenza (flu), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and COVID-19 for the week of Monday 16 February to Sunday 22 February 2026 (week 8).
Flu cases continue to drop
During week 8, the number of flu cases reported by laboratories decreased from 325 to 182 cases, representing a decrease of 44% compared with the previous week. This marks the sixth consecutive week of decline. 99.4% of typed results were influenza A and 0.6% were influenza B.
RSV cases decrease
For RSV, a decrease of 38% was recorded, with 58 confirmed cases compared with 94 the previous week. Since October 2025, 54% of infections have concerned children under ten years of age, indicating that the virus mainly affects younger age groups.
Drop in COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2 cases
During week eight, the number of positive SARS-CoV-2 cases decreased from 66 to 56 cases, representing a decrease of 15% compared with the previous week. The viral concentration detected in wastewater also decreased. The latest available sequencing data reveal that the XFG variant (45.5%), its sub-variant XFG.3 (26.7%) and the NB.1.8.1 variant (18.2%) predominate.
The ministry recommended the following preventative measures to limit the spread of viruses:
• wash hands regularly with soap and water for 30 seconds, thoroughly rubbing the palms, fingers, backs of hands and under the nails;
• cover one's mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing - or use the crook of the elbow;
• throw used tissues in the rubbish bin immediately and then wash one's hands;
• avoid physical contact such as hugs, kisses and handshakes;
• avoid crowds and gatherings during the epidemic season;
• stay home if sick to avoid infecting others;
• ventilate rooms regularly, at least three to four times a day for ten minutes.
