The Automobile Club Luxembourg (ACL), in collaboration with vehicle advertisement portal Luxauto, has provided an overview of recent trends in the used car market.

From Monday 12 to Saturday 24 May 2025, car dealerships across Luxembourg are hosting the thirteenth edition of the “AutoOccasiounsFestival”, an event dedicated to used vehicles. As part of this initiative, ACL analysed current market developments in partnership with Luxauto.

According to ACL and Luxauto, the used car market in Luxembourg recorded 59,341 registrations in 2024, surpassing the new car market, which saw 46,635 new vehicle registrations. This represented a 0.9% increase compared to the previous year.

Luxembourg’s used car market is considered relatively “safe” and “high quality”, according to ACL and Luxauto, although prospective buyers are still advised to carefully review a vehicle’s history and documentation. Many second-hand vehicles come from expired leasing contracts and tend to be well-equipped, as leasing companies prioritise features that make resale easier.

ACL and Luxauto noted that Luxembourg’s high purchasing power supports demand for new, well-equipped vehicles, many of which later enter the second-hand market. With an average fleet age of just eight years - the youngest in Europe - this contributes to the overall strength of the used car segment.

Another trend identified by ACL and Luxauto is that commercial operators dominate the sector: “only 11%” of listings on Luxauto are from private sellers, meaning that “nine out of ten” used cars are sold by dealers.

ACL and Luxauto reported that the typical used car in Luxembourg is listed at €42,758 with around 47,600 km on the clock. Petrol vehicles made up 62.8% of listings so far this year, followed by diesel (25.2%), hybrid (7.8%) and electric cars (4.3%). Diesel cars had the highest average mileage at 75,424 km, while electric vehicles showed the lowest at 23,111 km, with an average price of €41,958. Hybrid vehicles had the highest average price at €59,382.

The used car market in Luxembourg remains dominated by German brands, with Volkswagen leading at 14.5% of listings, followed by Skoda (12.9%) and BMW (8.1%). Audi, Mercedes, Cupra, Seat, Porsche, Peugeot and Ford complete the top ten. Skoda has notably increased its market presence this year.

Prices have risen sharply in recent years. In 2020, the average listed price was €26,332 with 56,435 km on the clock. In 2025, this figure increased to €42,758, marking a 62.4% rise, while mileage dropped to 47,606 km. Price growth was most modest for electric vehicles (up 9.6%). In comparison, petrol, hybrid and diesel models saw respective increases of 55.3%, 50.1% and 47.1%.

ACL and Luxauto attributed these trends to enhanced vehicle features, increasing electrification and the gradual decline of combustion engines. The figures refer to advertised prices, which may differ from final transaction amounts, as negotiations remain possible.
