On Monday 24 October 2022, the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE) published the latest gender equality indices for the European Union (EU) Member States.

EIGE has been measuring this index since 2010 and it is Luxembourg that has made the most significant progress since then.

With an increase of 12.3 points, Luxembourg is now awarded a score of 73.5 points, which corresponds to an improvement of more than 20% since 2010.

Luxembourg finds itself, as in the last publication, again in ninth position in the rankings with Sweden in first position. The European average is 68.6 index points.

"I am delighted with this success of our political choices while remaining vigilant with regard to the new challenges posed to gender equality by the recent crises and societal developments in general", said Luxembourg's Minister for Equality between Women and Men, Taina Bofferding.

The Gender Equality Index is based on the gaps between men and women in the following six areas: employment, income, education, work-life balance, decision-making and health.

Luxembourg has gained ground in almost all areas, except in education. According to EIGE, the reason for this is that, as across the EU, the COVID-19 pandemic has worsened social inequalities in education.

Minister Bofferding recalled that the index developed by EIGE is the basis of the Equality Observatory set up in Luxembourg by the Ministry for Equality between Women and Men and stressed the importance of precise and reliable data, “We can only change and improve what we measure. This is why the work of the Equality Observatory is essential to monitor and analyse the evolution of the situation of gender equality in order to make it a daily reality.”

Luxembourg has improved the most in the area of decision-making and yet this area remains the area where it presents the worst result with 59.7 points.
