According to a recent study by culinary-focused website Chef’s Pencil, Luxembourg City is part of the ‘1% Club’ for dining affordability.
For the study, Chef’s Pencil analysed the affordability of dining out, coffee and beer in more than 170 cities worldwide by comparing prices to local wages.
The results showed that Luxembourg City ranks twelfth worldwide for a mid-range three-course meal, with the average cost approximately $47 (€40) per person. Chef’s Pencil stated that due to strong local wages ($5,190 / €4,400 per month on average), this represented just 0.9% of monthly income and placed Luxembourg in the elite global “1% Club” of cities where eating out consumes 1% or less of local salaries.
In the category of coffee, Luxembourg ranked fifth globally for coffee affordability. Chef’s Pencil stated that a cappuccino costs around $4.30 (€3.66) and enjoying one every day would consume only 2.5% of monthly wages, making daily coffee easily accessible for most residents in the Grand Duchy.
In the third category of beer, Luxembourg ranked 86th worldwide, with a pint costing approximately $6.90 (€5.87), representing just 0.8% of the average monthly salary, keeping beer reasonably affordable relative to income.
In comparison to other European countries, Chef’s Pencil noted that Luxembourg ranked alongside the best-performing cities on the continent, which included Paris, Zurich and Geneva, all of which combined high wages with relatively high prices to keep dining and daily indulgences accessible for locals.
The data used in the analysis was sourced from Numbeo, a crowdsourced database that tracks both cost-of-living and wage data around the globe.
