On Tuesday 25 August 2026, Luxembourg's Roads and Bridges Administration announced that the second motorway tunnel maintenance and cleaning campaign of 2026 will begin on Tuesday 1 September 2026.
The campaign aims to maintain a high level of safety for all road users and includes preventive and corrective maintenance of safety equipment. The works will also involve checking the operation and interaction of various systems, as well as cleaning tunnel walls.
According to the administration, the works are intended to improve infrastructure reliability and significantly reduce the risk of unexpected closures outside scheduled maintenance periods, helping maintain traffic flow and limit disruption for motorists.
To minimise the impact on traffic and coordinate the works with other construction projects, most tunnel maintenance and cleaning operations will take place overnight.

The campaign will cover the Grouft, Rëngelbour, Stafelter, Gousselerbierg, Mersch, Roost, Colmar-Berg, Schieren, Howald, Cents, Richard Serra, Kirchberg, Saint-Esprit, Pénétrante-Sud, Merl, Pétange-Eglise, Biff, Accès Secondaire à Esch-Belval, Micheville, Aessen, Ehlerange, Foetz, Frisange, Mondorf and Markusberg tunnels and wildlife crossings.
The maintenance will cover equipment including ventilation and fire detection systems, CO and opacity sensors, foam extinguishers, SOS niches, anemometers, tunnel and emergency lighting, public address and radio systems, emergency call points, video surveillance, automatic incident and smoke detection systems, traffic counting equipment, IT and telephone networks, road signs, fire hydrants, road surfaces, civil engineering structures, transformers, generators, pumps and retention basins, noted the administration.
