With the end-of-year festivities getting underway, Chronicle.lu is compiling a series of articles exploring some of the Christmas markets taking place across the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
While major events such as the markets in Luxembourg City and Esch-sur-Alzette run for several weeks, many smaller yet equally charming local markets open for just one day or a single weekend.
The "Chrëschtmaart" at the Heringer Millen tourist centre in Mullerthal took place from Friday 5 to Sunday 7 December 2025 - just in time for the second Sunday of Advent. With a similar layout to last year, the market was cosy, festively decorated and nestled in the heart of nature, surrounded by forest and rivers - with the small but iconic Schiessentümpel waterfall nearby.
About 25 stands (wooden huts) operated by local clubs, non-profit organisations and artisans offered visitors a variety of seasonal treats and gifts, including: homemade apple cider / juice ("Viz"), mulled wine and gin; freshly baked "Boxemännecher" (festive sweet brioche), "Stollen" (fruit bread) and "Millebrout" ("mill bread") from the wood-fired oven; baked potatoes with or without bacon and/or raclette cheese; various grilled meats; pulled pork; "Kniddelen" (dumplings); and crepes. Christmas cookies, as well as a selection of handmade decorations and other festive gifts, were also available. Cash and/or card payments were generally accepted.
The programme featured live concerts each day and a visit from "Kleeschen" (Saint Nicholas) on Sunday afternoon.
Once again this year, the Christmas market was registered as a "Green Event", signalling a commitment to reducing its ecological footprint.
The market was family- and dog-friendly, with an outdoor playground in front of the entrance. Heaters and covered tables were set up around the site to keep visitors warm and sheltered from the rain.
Chronicle.lu visited on Saturday 6 December around lunchtime, when the market was not too crowded and it was raining - and muddy, as last year, so sturdy shoes are recommended. More visitors arrived in the evening to enjoy the festive treats and Christmas lights against the beautiful natural backdrop.
Christmas decorations included a festive "living room" scene in a wooden chalet, where visitors could sit on a sofa or armchair and take photos next to a decorated Christmas tree and fireplace. Additional Christmas trees and lights dotted the market, contributing to a cosy atmosphere.
