Luxembourg's Water Management Agency (AGE) has announced the opening of the 2026 bathing season, starting on Friday 1 May.
With the arrival of warmer weather, the bathing season is back in Luxembourg. The following bodies of waters will be open for swimming from 1 May to 30 September 2026:
- the two Weiswampach lakes (upper and lower) in the municipality of Weiswampach;
- the Upper Sûre lake in the municipalities of Boulaide, Esch-sur-Sûre and Lac de la Haute-Sûre;
- the Remerschen ponds (designated swimming area) in the municipality of Schengen;
- the Echternach lake (designated swimming area - "Adventure Island") in the municipality of Echternach.
To ensure safe swimming, microbiological quality is monitored throughout the bathing season.
These checks are carried out at designated monitoring points, in accordance with the amended Grand-Ducal Regulation of 19 May 2009 establishing special protection measures and monitoring programmes for bathing water quality.
Based on Article 3 of the aforementioned regulation, bathing water quality for 2026 was assessed at the end of the 2025 bathing season, based on the results of monitoring carried out between 2022 and 2025.
Water quality in the Weiswampach lakes (zones 1-4), the Upper Sûre lake (Rommwiss, Liefrange, Burgfried, Fuussefeld, Insenborn, Lultzhausen) and the Remerschen ponds (zones 1-4) was rated "excellent". Water quality in the Echternach lake (designated bathing area) was rated "good".
If toxins produced by cyanobacteria (also known as blue-green algae) or other potential pollutants are detected, swimming will be prohibited in the affected areas until the risk has passed.
To increase vigilance regarding blue-green algae, the "Bloomin'Algae" app allows the public to report sightings and submit photos via the platform.
