Details:

In 2019, Luxembourg became the first country to declare Europe Day, celebrated on 9 May, a public holiday.

Europe Day pays tribute to the Schuman Declaration of 9 May 1950 and celebrates the European values of peace, unity, solidarity, democracy and freedom.

This year, on Thursday 9 May from 12:00 to 18:00, the official celebrations in the Grand Duchy are taking place inside and outside the Konrad Adenauer building of the European Parliament in Luxembourg-Kirchberg, with a nod to the European elections in June 2024 and the role of democracy.

This Europe Day will see both the European Parliament open its doors to the public and the opening of the new interactive EU information centre "Europa Experience".

This edition will also highlight the 20th anniversary of the 2004 enlargement, when ten countries joined the European Union.

The official ceremony will take place at 14:00 on 9 May in the presence of Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, as well as the President of the Chamber of Deputies (parliament), Claude Wiseler, Luxembourg's Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade and Minister for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Affairs, Xavier Bettel, European Parliament Vice-President Marc Angel, European Commissioner (for Jobs and Social Rights) Nicolas Schmit and the Mayor of Luxembourg City, Lydie Polfer. Various stands will be set up as part of the Democracy Village.

Further details about the Europe Day official celebrations, organised by the Representation of the European Commission in Luxembourg in collaboration with the European Parliament, the Luxembourg Government and the City of Luxembourg, are available online at https://luxembourg.representation.ec.europa.eu/actualites-et-evenements/evenements-0/europe-day-2024-2024-05-09_fr?prefLang=en.
