From Monday 8 to Tuesday 9 September 2025, Luxembourg's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Xavier Bettel, paid a working visit to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

As reported by Luxembourg's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, Minister Bettel held meetings with Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, as well as the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamad Hasan, and the Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry, Tengku Zafrul Aziz.

According to the press release, these meetings provided an opportunity to review bilateral relations between the two countries and highlighted their shared commitment to multilateralism and a rules-based international system. Discussions also focused on current international issues, including the situation in Gaza, the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, and international trade. They also discussed Malaysia's upcoming ASEAN chairmanship in 2025, confirming its leading role within the regional association.

Moreover, the visit featured an in-depth discussion with Malaysian economic stakeholders and investors. During his address to local economic leaders, Minister Bettel highlighted Luxembourg's strategic role as a preferred gateway to the European market, driven by an open, innovative and stable economy.

The Foreign Ministry noted that many opportunities for cooperation exist between Luxembourg and Malaysia, whose economy it described as dynamic and driven by innovation, particularly in the digital, finance, green economy and logistics sectors. The statement added that Luxembourg places particular importance on diversifying its economic partnerships, particularly with strategic and high-growth regions such as Southeast Asia.

This is the first visit by a Luxembourg foreign minister to Malaysia in ten years.
