On Wednesday 4 February 2026, Luxembourg's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Xavier Bettel, met his South African counterpart, the Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, in Johannesburg, South Africa.

During their meeting, the two ministers welcomed the “excellent” bilateral relations between Luxembourg and South Africa and expressed their shared willingness to strengthen cooperation further, particularly in the economic and trade fields. They also welcomed Luxembourg’s plans to consider opening an embassy in South Africa, which is expected to help to deepen cooperation between the two countries.

According to Luxembourg's Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade, the discussions covered international current affairs, in particular Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East, as well as developments in the Great Lakes region in Africa.

The ministers reaffirmed their shared commitment to multilateralism, a rules-based international order and a strong and inclusive United Nations system.
