On the evening of Saturday 28 February 2026, Luxembourg's Ministry of State and the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Defence, Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade issued a joint statement regarding the situation in the Middle East.

According to the statement, the Luxembourg government is following the hostilities between the United States (US), Israel and Iran, and developments throughout the Middle East region, with "great concern". Prime Minister Luc Frieden and Deputy Prime Minister Xavier Bettel met on Saturday afternoon to review the situation and discuss the potential implications for Luxembourg nationals as well as regional stability. The ministries added that Luxembourg would continue to coordinate with its partners at the European level and in the Middle East.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its consular assistance service, is currently assisting Luxembourg nationals in the region and is in contact with Luxair (which earlier returned a Dubai-bound flight to Luxembourg). The ministry has urged all citizens to follow the instructions of local authorities, stay informed of the situation and register their travel plans on the "Lëtzebuerger am Ausland" (LamA) platform. At the time of writing, the ministry "strongly advises" against all travel to the crisis region, particularly to the Gulf countries, as airspace closures and disruptions are likely to continue for some time.

The Luxembourg government reaffirmed its "full solidarity" with the Iranian people, who have been "brutally oppressed for decades by the regime in Tehran", and expressed support for their right to self-determination and their mobilisation to defend freedom and fundamental rights. The statement noted that Luxembourg has supported several international initiatives and resolutions in this regard, as well as all restrictive measures adopted by the European Union, including the EU's recent designation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organisation.

The Luxembourg government also expressed its solidarity with the countries of the region facing Iranian attacks in retaliation for Israeli and American strikes and called on Iran to immediately cease these attacks. The government called on all parties to "exercise restraint, work towards de-escalation, protect civilian populations and act in full compliance with international law."

"Iran must cease all activities that threaten international peace and security, including its nuclear programme. Luxembourg supports all diplomatic efforts to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons," the statement concluded.
