On Thursday 19 March 2026, Luxembourg’s Ministry of State reported that Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden attended the European Council meeting in Brussels.

At the meeting heads of state and government discussed the situation in Iran and the military escalation in the Middle East, as well as the geopolitical and economic repercussions of this crisis, including its impact on energy prices.

According to the ministry, a priority for this European Council, and for Luxembourg, was the discussion on the strategic competitiveness of the European Union. Other items on the agenda included the next multiannual financial framework, security and defence, and migration. The situation in Ukraine was also addressed.

The ministry reported that Heads of State and Government met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Another guest at this European Council was Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, who joined the leaders for a working lunch devoted to multilateralism, in the context of deteriorating international circumstances.
