On Thursday 23 and Friday 24 April 2026, European Union (EU) leaders, including Luxembourg Prime Minister Luc Frieden, are meeting in Cyprus.

The ongoing informal meeting of EU Heads of State and Government is chaired by the President of the European Council, António Costa, and hosted by the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides - Cyprus currently holds the Council presidency (until 30 June 2026).

The meeting provides an opportunity for leaders to take stock of the geopolitical and energy situation, particularly in light of tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, and the challenges these pose for the EU. An informal working lunch with key regional partners in the Middle East was scheduled for Friday.

In addition, the Heads of State and Government were due to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky to discuss the latest developments in Ukraine amid Russia's war of aggression, as well as the military and financial support provided by the EU.

The EU's Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for 2028-2034 is also on the agenda.

Commenting on the informal meeting on social media, Prime Minister Luc Frieden said: "The current geopolitical situation requires a united and strong Europe."
