The municipalities of Junglinster and Betzdorf have announced that Cuban artist Dagoberto Rodríguez, founding member of Cuban contemporary-art collective Los Carpinteros, will present his first solo show in Luxembourg from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 29 November 2026.
Produced by VF Art Projects, curated by Emanuela Mazzonis and supported by the Embassy of Spain in Luxembourg and Luxembourg’s Ministry of Culture, the exhibition will unfold across two venues, set fifteen minutes apart: Château de Bourglinster and Al Kierch in Roodt-sur-Syre.
From 24 October to 29 November 2026, the exhibition Terracotta Satellites will take over Château de Bourglinster. Inside the château, a large installation of terracotta satellites will feature, alongside a variety of paintings and videos. The organisers say the exhibition “will give physical form to the invisible signals that connect and observe us,” wherein “the artist questions the power of communication networks, surveillance and our vulnerability to technology.”
At the same time, the former church of Roodt-sur-Syre will host the installation El gimnasio del pensamiento(The Gymnasium of Thought): a full-scale gym with bars, benches, rings and a climbing rope, where the weight plates bear the names of great writers and thinkers, from Simone de Beauvoir to Marguerite Yourcenar. Described by the organiser as “a space once devoted to the sacred, the artist sets today’s cult of the body against the culture of the mind… the work is a reminder of what education and books still mean in an increasingly digital world.”
The official opening on Saturday 24 October will begin at 11:00 at Al Kierch in Roodt-sur-Syre (10 Rue d’Olingen) in the presence of the artist, whose work is held in the collections of MoMA, Tate Modern, the Centre Pompidou, the Guggenheim and the Museo Reina Sofía.
“I don’t think art is capable of changing governments or solving political problems. However, it is capable of generating a state of opinion about a government. My mission as an artist is to set up ‘poetic stages’, and my practice is a form of ‘poetic activism’,” said Dagoberto Rodríguez.
Dagoberto Rodríguez will also feature as part of Luxembourg Art Week, from Friday 20 to Sunday 22 November, when large iron sculptures inspired by the toy construction bricks he longed for as a child in Cuba will be shown on the terrace of the Lëtzebuerg City Museum.
