On Tuesday 12 August 2025, the Grand Ducal Police issued a warning regarding a series of ongoing scams in which fraudsters impersonate police officers or bank employees.
The police have recently received multiple reports of cases in which scammers have contacted victims pretending to be police officers or bank employees.
The perpetrators use a common scam in which the victim is contacted by a supposed bank employee who explains that suspicious transactions have been detected on the victim's account or that there are problems with their account. They then claim that bank employees or police officers need to collect their cards and verify the access data.
The authorities reminded the public that all police officers in Luxembourg speak fluent Luxembourgish and are able to provide official identification. In case of doubt, the public are urged to call the emergency number 113.
Furthermore, the police emphasised that reputable administrations, companies and banks would never ask customers to hand over their cards or access data to strangers, nor request personal information over the phone. If one suspects a scam, do not succumb to pressure - contact the relevant institution directly.
The police also urged the public to inform and educate others, particularly older neighbours, about this scam.
Attached to the warning were images of an official police ID card and uniforms to help the public distinguish genuine police officers.
