On Sunday 31 August 2025, Luxembourg’s Minister for Agriculture, Food and Viticulture and Minister for Consumer Protection, Martine Hansen, together with the Minister for Culture and Minister Delegate for Tourism, Eric Thill, attended the commemorative ceremony in Wiltz marking the general strike of 1942.

According to Luxembourg’s Service for the Remembrance of the Second World War, it was in the “martyred city” of Wiltz that the general strike began 83 years ago in protest against the proclamation of the forced conscription of young Luxembourgers into the German army by Gauleiter Gustav Simon on 30 August 1942.

The Nazi occupier subsequently arrested 125 strikers. Twenty-one of them were sentenced to death and executed.

Their courageous commitment, as well as that of all men and women of the Resistance during the Second World War, will never be forgotten, noted the service.
