On Wednesday 17 June 2026, the Luxembourg Army held its traditional military ceremony to mark National Day in Diekirch, in the presence of Luxembourg’s Minister of Defence, Yuriko Backes, and the Chief of Defence, General Steve Thull.

The ceremony brought together civil and military authorities, as well as members of the public, and followed the tradition of paying tribute on the occasion of the birthday of the Grand Duke Guillaume.

The 2026 ceremony highlighted the Luxembourg Army's modernised capabilities and the daily commitment of its personnel in an evolving security environment. In their speeches, Commander of the Forces Colonel Alain Schoeben and Minister Backes said the Army plays an essential role in protecting the country and supporting Luxembourg's international commitments. They also stressed the need to continue investing in personnel and military capabilities.

In her address, Minister Backes said: "Democracy depends on peace and freedom, which you, our servicemen and servicewomen, safeguard alongside our allies. For this, you deserve everyone's respect. At a time when tensions, conflicts and wars are increasing, we need dedicated and principled women and men more than ever to serve in the Army."

The Luxembourg Military Band, led by Lieutenant Colonel Jean-Claude Braun, provided musical accompaniment throughout the ceremony. During the event, the Army presented honours to service personnel in recognition of their commitment and professionalism. The programme continued with a parade of military units and a motorised detachment, showcasing the Army's modernised operational capabilities and the continued development of its equipment to meet current and future challenges.

The ceremony concluded with exchanges between military personnel and members of the public, highlighting that “National Day is also an opportunity to bring people together and express mutual appreciation”, noted the Army.
