On Thursday 13 August 2026, Luxembourg athlete Ruben Querinjean became the second finalist for the Grand Duchy at the 2026 European Athletics Championships at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, United Kingdom.
The 24-year-old runner competed in the second heat of the men's 3,000m steeplechase, finishing fourth in 8:35.07. He recorded the sixth-fastest time overall among the sixteen athletes who qualified for the final.
According to the Luxembourg Athletics Federation (FLA), Ruben Querinjean managed his race well despite the jostling and changes of pace throughout the laps. Regularly positioned within the leading group, he moved as far out as the third or fourth lane at some barriers in order to reduce the risk of falling.
"I never really like running in the morning; I always feel like my body reacts badly. The sensations were still quite good. Now the most important thing is recovery," commented Ruben Querinjean.
Querinjean will compete for the medals in the men's 3,000m steeplechase final on Sunday 16 August 2026 at 21:50.
His season best stands at 8:14.22, recorded at the Meeting International d'Athlétisme Herculis EBS at Stade Louis II in Monaco on 10 July 2026.
Ruben Querinjean’s personal best of 8:09.47, which is also the Luxembourg national record, was set at the Memorial van Damme at the Boudewijnstadion in Brussels, Belgium, on 22 August 2025.
