On Tuesday 15 September 2026, the Luxembourg Bankers’ Association (ABBL) announced the launch of a free Business Support Desk aimed at helping companies navigate the process of opening a business bank account in Luxembourg.
According to the ABBL, opening a business bank account is an essential step for any company and, in most cases, the process is straightforward. Some companies, particularly those with complex structures, international activities or cases requiring more in-depth checks, may nevertheless need additional support. The new service is intended to facilitate guidance and dialogue in such situations.
The association noted that opening a business account requires banks to understand the company, its activities, structure, beneficial owners and expected flows. These checks notably reflect anti-money laundering and counter-terrorist financing rules, know-your-customer obligations and international sanctions regimes. Certain cases may therefore require more time or exchanges.
“A dynamic economy requires companies to have effective access to the banking services they need. Our role is to help the different parties understand each other better and to contribute to a process that is as clear and smooth as possible, while fully respecting the requirements applying to financial institutions,” stated ABBL CEO Jerry Grbic.
The Business Support Desk is available free of charge via the ABBL website. Companies can present their situation through a structured form, after which the ABBL can direct them to member institutions offering business account-opening services and, where relevant, facilitate dialogue with the institution concerned to clarify the status of an application or the next steps.
The service is open to all companies, irrespective of their sector of activity, seeking to establish a banking relationship with an ABBL member institution. This includes companies active in the defence sector. According to the ABBL, activity in this sector does not in itself constitute an obstacle to opening a bank account.
The association stressed that the Business Support Desk facilitates guidance, information and dialogue, but does not open accounts or replace either the assessment of an application or the decision to enter into a business relationship, both of which remain the responsibility of each financial institution.
“The Business Support Desk is a facilitator. It aims to improve dialogue, provide greater transparency on the process and prevent situations from being prolonged due to a lack of information or mutual understanding,” stated Sandrine Roux, Secretary General of the ABBL.
The service exclusively covers requests to open business accounts, and all information provided to the ABBL under the initiative is treated in strict confidence. The association added that the desk will also help identify potential friction points encountered in practice and support the continued improvement of the account-opening process and related support tools.
