On Tuesday 29 August 2023, a total of 52 mayors from across the Grand Duchy gathered in the early evening for the traditional Buergermeeschterdag (Mayors' Day) at the Schueberfouer fair, marking one of the signature highlights of the festival.
The mayors exchanged their offices for restaurant halls for a few hours, marking one of the signature highlights of the Schueberfouer festival. From 19:00 to 22:00, they served guests across seventeen venues around the fairground.
Shortly after 17:00, mayors gathered by the entrance of the fairground, where the President of Luxembourg's Federation of Fairground Operators (FNCF), Charles Hary, with others distributed aprons to each mayor, preparing them for a temporary shift from politics to hospitality. Once dressed, the group paused for photos before setting off to their respective work places.
The procession made its first stop at the restaurant Ponderosa, where they enjoyed some drinks and snacks before moving forwards. From there the group continued past the Bellevue attraction, pausing at various other restaurants, like Schwarzwaldhaus to enjoy tastings and conversations, while using the moment to relax before each mayor headed off to their designated restaurant.
At 19:00 the Kugener restaurant warmly welcomed their evening help to the waitstaff - Luxembourg City Mayor Lydie Polfer. The very first dish served to guests was the fair's iconic gebackenen Fouerfësch (fried fish), handed over by Mayor Polfer, to the delight of both diners and her fellow mayors.
Together the participating mayors symbolically ‘earn’ around €5,000 in total during the evening, with the full amount donated to the Luxembourg Red Cross.
