On Monday 2 March 2026, Luxembourg’s Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity, in collaboration with ALUSEAU (Luxembourg Association of Water Services) and the Water Management Administration, launched the campaign “Wastewater – Wat leeft?”.
The ministry reported that the initiative aims to inform and raise awareness among the general public about the essential role of wastewater management in protecting the environment and water resources in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
From Monday 2 March 2026, a dedicated website - ofwaasser.lu - and a series of educational materials, communication tools and information resources will be distributed throughout the country to explain, in an accessible manner, the journey of wastewater, the functioning of sewer networks and wastewater treatment plants, as well as the impact of everyday actions on the quality of watercourses and, ultimately, on drinking water.
The project is financed by the members of ALUSEAU (sanitation sector) and by the Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Biodiversity through the Environmental Protection Fund.
The ministry noted that each day, wastewater from households, economic activities and public infrastructure is collected, transported and treated before being returned to the natural environment. While Luxembourg’s sanitation infrastructure performs efficiently, its proper functioning depends above all on individual behaviour. The campaign is designed to highlight this everyday subject and to explain how wastewater flows through pipes, how wastewater treatment plants operate and how individual habits influence the quality of surface water and the protection of water resources. Improper use of the sanitation network can lead to blockages, technical malfunctions, overloading of facilities and increased pollution of aquatic environments.
The ministry said: “Raising public awareness of these issues is essential to ensure sustainable water management in Luxembourg,” and described how the campaign emphasises the need to better understand the journey of wastewater and the functioning of sanitation infrastructure, seeking to make visible a process that is often overlooked: what happens once water disappears into the pipes, how it is transported, treated and ultimately returned to the natural environment.
The ministry added: “Through clear explanations and practical examples, the campaign shows what may – and what must not – be discharged into the sanitation network. It demonstrates that certain everyday behaviours, which may sometimes seem harmless, can nevertheless cause blockages, disrupt the operation of wastewater treatment plants or harm the quality of watercourses.”
Moreover, the ministry stressed that the objective is to raise public awareness of the importance of responsible actions and to underline that everyone has a role to play in protecting water resources and ensuring the proper functioning of public infrastructure in order to support sustainable water management in Luxembourg.
