Tuesday 22 September 2026 marked the start of the autumn semester at Luxembourg’s National Institute of Languages (Institut national des langues Luxembourg - INLL) for more than 8,700 learners eager to discover a language or improve their language skills.
According to the INLL and Luxembourg’s Ministry of Education, Children and Youth, the institute recorded a new semester record both for the number of registrations and for how quickly courses became fully booked. It offers courses in thirteen languages.
Courses and locations
For the autumn semester, the INLL is offering nearly 580 language courses for adults across its three sites: INLL-Glacis, INLL-Belval, at the Université populaire site, and INLL-Mersch.
Alongside Luxembourg’s three administrative languages, Luxembourgish, German and French, the INLL offers courses in English, Chinese, Spanish, Italian, Dutch, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Korean and Japanese.
To expand its course offer, the INLL has recruited new teachers for its English, Arabic, Korean, French, Japanese, Luxembourgish and Russian departments.
Adults who are not beginners in their chosen language must first take an online test and attend an orientation interview to obtain a recommended level before registering for a course, subject to availability. Registration for the autumn semester remains possible until Friday 2 October 2026, provided places are available. Appointments for orientation interviews can be made throughout the school year via myinl.inll.lu.
Training for adult language educators
Alongside the Zertifikat Lëtzebuergesch Léiere Léieren (ZLLL), aimed at people wishing to train or improve their skills as Luxembourgish teachers in adult education, the INLL is offering the Certificat d’enseignement en langues à visée professionnelle (CELVP) for the second consecutive year. The CELVP prepares participants to teach professionally oriented language courses to adult learners. Like the ZLLL, it combines online learning with in-person sessions over 120 hours divided into three modules.
The INLL has also added a third training course this year, Kommunikatiounscoach. The 40-hour course prepares participants to support colleagues in developing their Luxembourgish communication skills, particularly in multicultural workplaces. It is taught in Luxembourgish and combines online learning with in-person sessions. Seven volunteers from the Résidence pour personnes âgées an de wisen took part in a pilot session in spring 2026.
The INLL will hold a diploma ceremony on Wednesday 30 September 2026 in the presence of Claude Meisch, Luxembourg's Minister of Education, Children and Youth, Pierre Reding, Commissioner for the Luxembourgish Language, the management of the Adult Education Service (SFA) and the management of the INLL. Thirty ZLLL graduates, eight CELVP graduates and seven Kommunikatiounscoach graduates will receive their diplomas.
Next stage for 'Moving languages'
From February 2027, the "Moving Languages" project will launch training in French and Luxembourgish for future trainers in the method. According to the INLL, this next stage will pass on the project’s methodology and support new trainers in applying it, with the aim of gradually expanding the offer of "Moving Languages" courses in Luxembourg.
INLL to move from Mersch to Ettelbruck
The INLL’s Mersch site will close at the end of the autumn 2026 semester, with its activities transferring to the Ettelbruck One building. Language courses will begin at the new site on Tuesday 16 February 2027, at the start of the spring semester. The INLL plans to move its administration at the end of 2026.
The course offer for Ettelbruck is still being assessed to meet public needs. It is expected to include Luxembourgish, German, English and French.
INLL figures show that registrations across the full 2025/26 academic year totalled 17,272, compared with 16,724 in 2024/25.
