On Thursday 15 October 2026, Lidl Luxembourg marked 25 years of operations in the Grand Duchy and announced further plans to expand its network to nineteen stores by 2030.
Since opening its first supermarket in Differdange in 2001, Lidl has expanded to thirteen stores across Luxembourg. The retailer currently welcomes around 100,000 unique customers each week and employs 455 people in the country.
According to Lidl, over the past 25 years it has also expanded the size of its stores, increased its range of local products and introduced digital shopping technologies.
To respond to changing consumer habits, Lidl Luxembourg has continued to expand and modernise its store network. While its first store in Differdange had a sales area of 600 m², the average store size reached 1,366 m² in October 2026 and is expected to increase to 1,466 m² by the end of the year. Future projects are expected to have an average sales area of 1,666 m².
Following the modernisation of its Foetz store during the summer, Lidl inaugurated its new store in Mersch on Thursday 15 October 2026, introducing the retailer's latest store concept.
Further developments are planned in Pétange in December 2026, Cloche d'Or in January 2027 and Wasserbillig in February 2027, following a complete reconstruction. With the opening of the Pétange store, all Lidl stores in Luxembourg will have a sales area exceeding 1,000 m².
"Luxembourg is a demanding market in which we see tremendous growth potential. Our ambition is clear: to open approximately one store per year until 2030, bringing our total to nineteen locations in the Grand Duchy," said Denys Vandenrijt, Director of Lidl Luxembourg. He added that this expansion would be accompanied by the continued modernisation of sales areas to provide greater comfort for customers and employees.
Beyond its store network, Lidl noted that it has also expanded its range of products specifically intended for the Luxembourg market. Ten years ago, the retailer offered around 30 local products. Today, its range includes 360 products dedicated to the Luxembourg market, including approximately 100 products from local and regional suppliers such as Luxlait, Cobolux, Grosbusch, Moulins de Kleinbettingen and Panelux.
Lidl added that it also regularly introduces specialities from its Portuguese, Italian and French supply networks. Since 2023, a dedicated administrative office in Dudelange has coordinated this locally adapted purchasing strategy.
The retailer has also introduced new technologies aimed at improving the shopping experience. Its latest store concept includes fully refrigerated fruit and vegetable sections, smart scales using artificial intelligence (AI) for visual recognition, self-checkout tills and Scan&Go technology.
According to Lidl, 71% of its customers in Luxembourg use the Lidl Plus application, which has more than 44,000 active users each week.
Lidl also highlighted its workforce of 455 employees and its investment in professional development. Since opening the Lidl Academy in Dudelange in December 2023, the retailer has welcomed nearly 360 new employees and students through personalised training programmes, while 46 employees have received internal promotions.
