On Monday 6 July 2026, Luxembourg's Prime Minister, Luc Frieden, took part in the Global Dialogue on AI Governance, organised under the auspices of the United Nations in Geneva.
According to Luxembourg's Ministry of State, the dialogue brought together heads of state and government, representatives of international organisations, private sector leaders and experts to discuss international governance of artificial intelligence (AI) based on trust, respect for international law and the founding values of the United Nations.
During his address, Prime Minister Frieden said that the benefits of AI are not automatic, while its risks are not inevitable. "We have a choice. Our objective must therefore be clear: to develop AI that inspires trust. It is up to us to decide how we use it, how we implement it and the purposes it should serve."
The ministry noted that the Prime Minister stressed the importance of establishing a regulatory framework based on multilateralism to ensure AI serves the public interest. He added that values, trust and diversity are at the heart of Luxembourg's AI strategy.
"Through a range of projects, we encourage and invest in the development of safe, trustworthy and clearly human-centred AI, whether in education, cybersecurity, finance or public services," Minister Frieden said.
On the sidelines of the event, Prime Minister Frieden met United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to discuss current international developments and reaffirm Luxembourg's commitment to an international system based on shared values and common rules.
According to the ministry, the Luxembourg's Prime Minister also held meetings with Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO), to discuss AI applications in healthcare, as well as with Deema Al Yahya, Secretary-General of the Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO), and Mirjana Spoljaric Egger, President of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), on international cooperation in artificial intelligence, including humanitarian applications.
