Luxembourg's Minister of Health, Lydia Mutsch, has announced that she has agreed in principle to the planning of a new construction project at the Hospital intercommunal Steinfort (HIS).

The project provides for the reconstruction of the geriatric rehabilitation service, with an extension of 30 to 40 beds as well as the necessary surfaces for physiotherapy and occupational therapy. A day hospital for geriatric rehabilitation will complete the offer, as part of the HIS specialised hospital mission.

Taking into account the aging of the population and the specific needs of the elderly, the Ministry of Health attaches great importance to the rehabilitation of the patients requiring a specific treatment, among others after a surgical intervention or a cerebrovascular accident, with the aim of quickly find a better autonomy of life. The new hospital law also provides for a significant increase in geriatric rehabilitation beds at the national level (increase from 105 to 310 beds).

"It is important that our hospitals - acute and rehabilitation - can evolve with the needs of patients (as well as the needs of older people often requiring specific care, all other patients coming as an outpatient or long-stay hospitalisation), while taking into account technological progress. This requires flexible constructions that meet current standards and requirements," said Minister Mutsch.

The Ministry of Health has thus signed an agreement to state funding of €8 million through the Hospital Fund (80% of the construction costs, in accordance with the law of 8 March 2018 on hospital establishments and the hospital planning).

Other construction projects in the hospital sector

In the course of the legislature, the government has set to work on many modernisation and construction projects in the hospital sector:
• New annex and modernisation of the Zithaklinik (under construction);
• Extension of Kirchberg Hospitals, e.a. Juvenile Psychiatry;
• Financing law for the construction of a new "Südspidol" hospital centre;
• Agreement in principle for the construction of a new CHL hospital centre;
• New dialysis service extension of the stationary and ambulatory geriatric rehabilitation infrastructure at the Northern Hospital Centre;
• Construction of a youth rehabilitation center in Putscheid;
• Pre-project reconstruction of the CHNP main building in Ettelbruck for better care for patients with mental illnesses.
