On Tuesday 5 May 2026, the Luxembourg Red Cross issued an urgent appeal to address the worryingly low level of blood stocks, which it said could hinder the country’s ability to meet the needs of Luxembourg hospitals in the coming weeks.

According to the Luxembourg Red Cross, current blood stocks cover barely one week of hospital requirements in Luxembourg. It urged individuals who are able to donate blood are urged to come forward in the coming days and stressed: “More than ever, donor participation is essential to avoid a critical situation in the coming weeks.”

The Luxembourg Red Cross said that although the alert threshold has not yet been reached, the situation remains fragile. Hospital demand, however, remains constant throughout the year, regardless of the season.

The humanitarian organisation attributed the decline in reserves to the Easter school holidays, which led to a reduction in the number of donations. This has been compounded by the numerous public holidays and long weekends in May, a period traditionally marked by a significant drop in attendance at the Blood Transfusion Centre.

In addition, the upcoming arrival of summer is accompanied by the first departures abroad. Some travel may temporarily prevent individuals from donating blood, further reducing the pool of available donors in the coming weeks.

“Donating blood is a simple but essential act that saves lives every day in Luxembourg. Any of us, or our loved ones, may one day need a blood transfusion. In this sensitive period, every donation counts in maintaining sufficient stock and ensuring the safety of patients and injured individuals. The Luxembourg Red Cross would like to thank in advance all those who respond to this call for solidarity,” said Anne Schuhmacher, Director of the Blood Transfusion Centre.

Blood donations can be made at the Blood Transfusion Centre in Luxembourg-Ville (42 Boulevard Joseph II) on Mondays, Tuesdays and Fridays from 08:00 until 16:00 and on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 08:00 until 18:00. Free parking is available at the Luxembourg Red Cross headquarters (44 Boulevard Joseph II).

The Esch-Belval medical centre (3-5 Avenue du Swing) is also open on Mondays and Tuesdays from 08:00 until 16:00, with free underground parking available for two hours at the Belval Plaza shopping centre. A list of other external blood donor points is available on the blood donation website. Blood donor points are closed on public holidays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Those wishing to donate blood are advised to make an appointment in advance at: https://dondusang.lu/en/ or via tel.: 275-540-00. Potential donors can, however, attend without an appointment at the Blood Transfusion Centre in Luxembourg City. Those who are not sure whether they can donate can take a pre-test online to check their eligibility: https://dondusang.lu/nos-questionnaires/.

The Luxembourg Red Cross is the sole organisation responsible for the collection and management of blood donations in Luxembourg.
