On Wednesday 8 October 2025, Luxembourg’s Ministry for Mobility and Public Works and the Ministry of the Economy published details of the Vëlosummer 2025 during which 43,704 cyclists participated.

The sixth edition of the Vëlosummer ran from Saturday 19 July to Sunday 24 August 2025 and was organised by the Ministry of Mobility and Public Works and the Ministry of the Economy in collaboration with 59 municipalities, the regional tourist offices and the Highways Administration.

The programme invited residents and tourists to rediscover the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg by bicycle and supported the government’s strategy to promote attractive mobility for pedestrians and cyclists while also encouraging sustainable tourism by combining friendliness, encounters and discoveries through a family or group cycling tour.

The ministries noted that cycle tourism continues to grow in importance and figures from Luxembourg for Tourism show a steady increase in visitor interest in cycling, reflected in the strong turnout for Vëlosummer 2025.

Vëlosummer 2025 achieved record participation, with 43,704 cyclists taking part across 14 circuits, including five new ones. The routes covered 500 km, with over 110 km reserved exclusively for cyclists during one or two weekends. The ministries said the 40% increase compared with last year reflected both the strength of the initiative and the benefit of an additional weekend over previous years

According to the ministry, all circuits recorded notable attendance. Two stood out in particular: the Mamerdall Tour (6,386 cyclists over one weekend) and the Mam Vëlo iwwer Kopp an Dall (5,384 cyclists over the 37 days). Organisers extended the 2025 edition to six weeks to take account of railway improvement works on the northern line by Société Nationale des Chemins de Fer Luxembourgeois during the first part of Vëlosummer.

In addition to the longer duration, participants were able to take advantage of a new bicycle rental offer. Designed for those without their own bikes or who preferred not to transport them, the offer was available on nine circuits. Working with twelve partners and many dedicated contributors, organisers set up a network of seventeen rental points along or near the routes to provide a simple, efficient service.

After the first challenge in 2024, which required participants to ride all Vëlosummer routes using the VisitLuxembourg app, this year’s challenge involved covering the 500 km while answering a quiz question linked to each location at check-in. This approach gave participants a fun way to explore the country, its heritage and its natural environment. More than 200 participants — three times more than in 2024 — completed the challenge and received a Vëlosummer yellow jersey.

This year, Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Yuriko Backes, and Minister Delegate for Tourism, Eric Thill, joined the ‘Guide for One Day’ initiative as part of the “Lëtzebuerg, dat ass Vakanz!” campaign, organising a cycling outing open to the public. On Saturday 23 August, fifteen citizens rode the Uewersauer circuit with the two ministers and Martine Deprez, Minister of Health and Social Security.

“I greatly enjoyed the cycling tour! It was a fantastic way to unwind and relax while exploring one of the most authentic regions of our beautiful country. Vëlosummer has now firmly earned its place on the public summer activity calendar. I’m delighted to see the number of cycle tourists increasing substantially each year, proving that cycling has a bright future as a daily mode of transport,”: said Minister Backes.

Minister Thill added: “Vëlosummer 2025 has once again shown the richness of our country: iconic routes such as VëloViaNorden, new trails, a festive launch in Mersch and strategically located rental points to make the cycling experience easier. Once more, Vëlosummer has enabled people to discover Luxembourg, its varied regions, heritage and natural beauty in an original, friendly and safe way, on closed roads or cycle paths, with family or friends.”
