The Grand Ducal Police have announced that from Monday 16 to Sunday 29 June 2025, they conducted large-scale traffic checks focusing on distracted driving, with the aim of raising awareness and reducing road accidents.
The police reported that 579 fines (€250 and four points) were issued for mobile phone use while driving.
During these checks, drivers’ documents were also checked and 260 fines were issued, as well as eight summons reports.
In 52 of these cases, the driver was unable to present their license.
In addition, in 25 cases drivers were unable to present their registration certificate, 28 did not have valid insurance at the time of the check, 64 were unable to present a tax disc and in 96 cases, drivers were unable to present a valid technical inspection certificate.
Furthermore, in one case, the driver was unable to present a valid apprenticeship certificate and in two cases the drivers did not have their training logbook with them.
The police noted that driving is one of the primary causes of traffic accidents. Texting, as well as the use of apps or social media, significantly demands a driver's attention span. Moreover, smartphones distract the driver visually, aurally, physically and cognitively.
Lighting cigarettes, handling on-board instruments or the navigation system and talking using a hands-free kit are also sources of distraction, noted the police, who provide information and safety advice on their website.
The police added that distraction does not only affect motorists; other road users, such as motorcyclists, cyclists or pedestrians may be affected.
