A June sporting event involving over 400 students of the Gaston Diderich primary school in Belair was reported today to have raised an impressive €30,328 for the ALUPSE association.
425 students of Years 1-4 at the school participated in the 'Sponsored Run', which was organised by the Comité de l'École Fondamentale Gaston Diderich in collaboration with the Ville de Luxembourg and the Association des Parents.
In order to raise money, each runner incited sponsors to contribute a small amount of money for each round the student managed to complete.
Following the event, the organisers and students estimated the funds raised at €24,000, based on the number of laps completed and the offers committed to by sponsors. However, the final tally far surpassed their expectations, with a final calculation revealing that the young runners had raised a remarkable €30,328.
This impressive sum will be donated in its entirety to the Association Luxembourgeoise pour la Prévention des Sévices à Enfants (ALUPSE), which is a non-profit organisation established in the Grand Duchy in the 1980s as a means of working against child abuse and supporting its victims.
The feat reflects Luxembourg's continued support of ALUPSE, an follows a recent Delhaize charity sale for the association's sister project ALUPSE-Bébé and the Librarie Ernster Book Pyramid project which donated 10 cents to the association for every book received and in doing so made it into the Guinness Book of Records.
