Luxembourg Schools Expect Over 120k Pupils in 2026/27

On Thursday 10 September 2026, Luxembourg's Ministry of Education, Children and Youth presented statistics for the new school year.

According to the data, total enrolment in fundamental (primary) and secondary schools in Luxembourg will reach 120,181 pupils in 2026/2027, compared with 117,961 in 2025/26 (an increase of 2,220 pupils or approximately 1.9%).

In primary education, the total number of pupils is expected to rise from 63,329 in 2025/26 to 64,255 in 2026/27. Public schools are forecast to account for 58,647 pupils, including 55,934 following the ministry's official curriculum and 2,713 following an international programme. A further 5,608 pupils are expected to attend private and European schools.

At secondary level, the total number of pupils is forecast to increase from 54,632 to 55,926. Of these, 45,411 are expected to attend public secondary schools, while 10,515 will attend private and European schools.

Among pupils in public secondary education, 13,651 are expected to follow “enseignement secondaire classique”, while 24,828 will attend “enseignement secondaire général” or vocational training. A further 6,932 pupils are expected to follow an international programme (up from 6,349 in 2025/26).

The figures also provide projected enrolment numbers for individual public secondary schools. Lycée Technique du Centre is expected to have the largest enrolment, with 2,126 pupils, followed by Lycée Mathias-Adam with 2,030 and École Internationale Differdange et Esch-sur-Alzette with 1,869.

Meanwhile, the European Schools in Luxembourg-Kirchberg and Mamer are expected to have a combined 5,977 pupils in 2026/27. Among other schools not following the ministry's official curriculum, Lycée Vauban is forecast to have 2,600 pupils, followed by the International School of Luxembourg with 1,368 and St George's with 859.

The ministry also noted that it expects 6,616 teachers to work in public primary education during the 2026/27 school year, including 5,746 civil servants, 601 staff members on permanent contracts and 269 replacement teachers on fixed-term contracts. Women account for 80.45% of primary teaching staff.

At secondary level, the public education workforce is forecast to comprise 6,175 teachers. Of these, 4,068 are civil servants, 2,011 are state employees on permanent contracts and 96 are on fixed-term contracts, with women representing 55.2% of the total.

The document also noted that Luxembourg had 76,761 approved places in education and childcare facilities at the end of 2025, an increase of 5,408, or 7.6%, compared with 2024. This included 56,263 places in subsidised facilities and 18,852 in non-subsidised facilities.

In December 2025, 60,545 children residing in Luxembourg benefited from the “Chèque-service accueil” (CSA), equivalent to 65.4% of the eligible child population. A further 3,744 beneficiaries were children of cross-border workers.
