Luxembourg's national railway company, the CFL, has issued an update clarifying the circumstances surrounding rail disruptions on Tuesday 22 July 2025.
The CFL confirmed that an unexpected telecommunications cable outage by an external company caused the disruptions.
On Tuesday morning, at around 06:30, train services were disrupted on several lines due to a technical outage on the GSM-R communications network.
The CFL noted that its teams were able to quickly identify the source of the problem: the telecommunications cables were unexpectedly cut during work by an external company on the Howald stop extension project. This incident reportedly occurred despite a briefing given by CFL the day before to the company in question.
Due to the interruption of the GSM-R system, operating trains were stopped at the nearest station, leading to delays and cancellations while the problem was resolved.
The communications system was restored through alternative connections, which allowed a gradual resumption of service around 07:50.
The CFL apologised for any inconvenience caused to passengers.
