On Sunday 18 May 2025, Rugby Club Luxembourg (RCL) Lightning’s Junior Touch team took part in the inaugural Belgium Youth Championship held in Brussels.

According to Touch Luxembourg, seven teams of girls and boys aged between ten and fourteen took part in the tournament. RCL Lightning’s Dragons team won all their group matches, went on to beat fellow club team RCL Lightning CATS in the semi-final, and then claimed a 5-2 victory in the final against Den Haag side from the Netherlands. The CATS, noted as the only all-girl team in the competition, finished in fourth place.

Adult touch rugby is already considered Luxembourg’s number one mixed adult team sport played at international level, according to the organisers, and the event provided junior players with the opportunity to compete against teams from Belgium and the Netherlands. Touch Luxembourg noted that even at a young age, participants demonstrated the “flow, speed and agility” that make touch rugby “an inclusive and engaging sport.”

Starting in June, RCL’s fourteen- and fifteen-year-old players will have the opportunity to join their coaches in the club’s Social League, competing against teams from companies such as JP Morgan, Clearstream and Aztec, as noted by Touch Luxembourg. Children interested in joining are encouraged to come along to RCL, where Junior Touch training takes place every Saturday.

Touch Luxembourg is the national association for touch rugby in the Grand Duchy. It aims to promote the sport as a leading mixed-gender activity by increasing participation (particularly among women and children) and developing skills from beginner to international level. Owing to its minimal physical contact and emphasis on speed, teamwork and decision-making, touch is considered one of the most inclusive sports, often played in mixed teams across a wide range of ages and abilities.
