
On Wednesday 7 May 2025, the official opening ceremony of the Luxembourg Urban Garden (LUGA ) open-air exhibition, which will run until Saturday 18 October 2025, took place in the Pétrusse Valley in Luxembourg-Grund.
Luxembourg’s Grand Duke Henri, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Viticulture, Martine Hansen, Mayor of the City of Luxembourg, Lydie Polfer, First Alderman of the City of Luxembourg, Maurice Bauer, Mayor of Ettelbruck, Bob Steichen, First Alderman of Ettelbruck, Jean-Paul Schaaf, and LUGA General Coordinator, Ann Muller, attended the opening ceremony, along with over 800 guests, many of whom were involved in the creation and implementation of the project.
The theme of the temporary open-air exhibition is "Rendre Visible l'Invisible" (Make the Invisible Visible) and it is expected to offer many visual and sensory experiences of nature. The exhibition features urban gardens, artistic and landscape installations, agricultural projects and living spaces on 5km of trails in Ettelbruck and 11km of trails in Luxembourg City, covering Edouard André municipal park, the Alzette valley, the Pétrusse valley and Luxembourg-Kirchberg.
The unveiling of the Young Designers’ urban gardens, laid out along the Pétrusse river, took place during the ceremony, as did the inauguration of the LUGA Science Hub (also located in the Pétrusse valley), in which exhibitions, conferences, workshops and meetings will be held. The Science Hub will also serve as an information centre for visitors and locals alike. Tickets can be purchased here for the Aquatunnel sound art installation, the landscape installation “La Serre Merveilleuse”, as well as some workshops, exhibitions and guided bicycle tours. Most LUGA events are, however, free of charge.
Some new food and drink products have been created specifically to celebrate LUGA and are now on sale in various locations throughout the Grand Duchy. These include the limited edition Cuvée LUGA 2025 Crémant Millésimé, the first bottle of which was officially opened by Minister Hansen at the ceremony. The Fischer bakery group has launched a "LUGA Flower Bread” to mark the occasion and Marcello (Goeres Group) has created a LUGA rose ice cream.
Other new products will include LUGA beers from the Simon brewery as well as LUGA Wurscht, a special sausage made with tea from Téi vum Séi, located in the Upper Sûre Natural Park, which will be available at certain LUGA events and at the 2025 Ettelbruck Agricultural Fair which will take place from Friday 4 until Sunday 6 July 2025.
In Luxembourg City, the LUGA opening festival will take place in the Edouard André Municipal Park on Saturday 10 May 2025 from 13:30 until 21:00. It will feature musical acts, workshops, interactive artistic installations, food stands with local and seasonal produce and activities for all ages in the LUGA village. On Sunday 11 May 2025, Ettelbruck’s opening festival will take place at Däichwisen from 11:00 until 19:00. Highlights will include a farmer’s market, showcasing regional products, the inauguration of the "Urban Agricultural Trail", crop-growing demonstrations, open-air concerts, including a concert by the Ettelbrécker Musek, street performances and live interviews with exhibition partners.
