The Cinémathèque de la Ville de Luxembourg's annual City Open Air Cinema event has returned to Place Guillaume II (Knuedler) in Luxembourg-Ville.

The 2025 edition kicked off on Thursday 24 July with an open-air screening of Charlie Chaplin's political satire The Great Dictator (USA, 1940) and continued over the weekend with the 1985 family adventure comedy The Goonies, the 1950 classic film noir Sunset Boulevard and the 2024 dialogue-free animated adventure film Flow (Straume).

Chronicle.lu attended the screening of Sunset Boulevard on Saturday evening, which drew hundreds of spectators despite the rainy weather. The black-and-white film, directed by Billy Wilder and starring Gloria Swanson, William Holden and Erich von Stroheim, explores themes such as fame, delusion, isolation and the darker side of Hollywood.

City Open Air Cinema offers the public free outdoor evening screenings in the heart of Luxembourg City, showcasing films from various genres and eras to appeal to a broad audience. This summer’s programme runs until Thursday 31 July 2025.

Each screening is preceded by a brief introduction. Drinks and snacks are available for purchase on-site.

Admission is free, with seating operating on a first-come, first-served basis.
