On Friday 14 August 2026, the Automobile Club du Luxembourg (ACL) shared its recent publication highlighting changes in Luxembourg's new car market, including the growing share of electric vehicles (EV) and Chinese car brands.
Released on Monday 10 August 2026, the analysis, based on open data from the Société Nationale de Circulation Automobile (SNCA), showed that 4,277 new passenger cars were registered in Luxembourg in July 2026, down 3.1% from 4,412 in July 2025.
Chinese manufacturers accounted for 189 new registrations in July 2026, representing 4.4% of the market. This was up from a market share of 2.45% in July 2025, meaning their combined share had nearly doubled within one year.
The number of active Chinese car brands in Luxembourg also increased from nine to twelve over the same period, with Geely, BAW and Zeekr among the brands entering the market.
Furthermore, Jaecoo led Chinese brands in July with 49 newly registered vehicles, followed by BYD with 44 and MG with 27. Omoda recorded 19 registrations, while Leapmotor had twelve. BAIC and Forthing each recorded eleven registrations, followed by Xpeng with eight, Geely with four, BAW with two and Zeekr and Livan with one each.
The ACL noted that the increase reflected a trend already observed since the beginning of the year. During the first half of 2026, 1,052 new cars from Chinese brands were registered in Luxembourg, compared with 517 during the same period in 2025, representing an increase of 103.5%. Their market share consequently rose from 2.1% to 4.1%.
Commenting on the development, the ACL noted that Chinese manufacturers were "continuing to gain ground" in Luxembourg, against the backdrop of a car market increasingly shifting towards EV.
The July figures showed that fully electric cars accounted for 33% of new registrations, up from 19.5% in July 2025. Hybrids remained the largest category, at 36.9%. Together, electric and hybrid vehicles represented almost seven in ten new passenger cars registered during the month, while petrol vehicles accounted for 22.2% of registrations and diesel vehicles for 7.6%.
Among all manufacturers, BMW recorded the highest number of new registrations in July, with 516 vehicles, followed by Volkswagen with 436 and Mercedes with 420. The Mercedes CLA was the month's most registered model, ahead of the BMW iX3 and Škoda Kodiaq, with 95, 80 and 77 registrations, respectively.
