Comhaltas Luxembourg is organising an outdoor Summer Céilí (Irish folk dance gathering) on Friday 31 July 2026 at Place de Roedgen in Luxembourg-Cessange, starting at 19:00.
The free open-air event will feature live music, dancing and an introduction to céilí steps, with no experience required and everyone welcome to take part. The Céilí is being held as part of the City of Luxembourg’s “Mäi Quartier, Meng Plaz” programme. A food truck will provide food and soft drinks. The event is weather dependent.
Background
In Ireland, during the 18t and 19th centuries, the Catholic clergy grew worried about unsupervised courtship and drinking and actively discouraged such socialising. What grew up then was a series of informal social gatherings across rural Ireland, normally at a neutral crossroads between townlands where people from different neighbourhoods and villages could congregate.
The roadway was cleared and musicians playing the fiddle, accordion or melodeon provided live music while those attending sat on simple stools or boxes. They danced traditional set dances, reels, jigs and local solo step-dances.
In 1935, the Public Dance Halls Act 1935 made informal public dances illegal without a license, pushing the tradition indoors into supervised halls.
