The Grand Ducal Police have warned of fraudulent emails and text messages (SMS) circulating in Luxembourg and claiming to be from the police.

On Friday 20 October 2023, the police stated that they had received reports of "an increasing number" of cases in which private individuals were receiving an email or SMS in the name of the police and Guichet.lu, requesting them to pay a fine for an alleged traffic offence. After following the instructions in the email/SMS, victims are reportedly being contacted by fraudsters posing as fake bank officials looking to obtain their bank tokens, credit cards and login details. Victims are also being led to believe that money has been withdrawn from their account without authorisation and that their bank cards therefore need to be replaced.

The police have stressed that such messages are fake and recalled that such requests are not part of official procedures.

People who have received such messages are advised to ignore the requests; they should not download or open attached files and should ignore and delete the email/SMS. Anyone who has fallen victim to such fraud is asked to "immediately" file a complaint at a police station.
