On Tuesday 6 May 2025, Luxembourg's Minister for Mobility and Public Works, Yuriko Backes, and the Minister for Family Affairs, Solidarity, Living Together and Reception of Refugees, Max Hahn, in the presence of Bascharage Mayor Michel Wolter and representatives of the SERVIOR group, inaugurated the new "Op Acker" seniors' home (Maison des Aînés) in Bascharage.
Luxembourg's Ministry of Mobility and Public Works, the Ministry of Family Affairs, Solidarity, Living Together and Reception of Refugees and SERVIOR (offering services for elderly people in Luxembourg) noted in a press release that "the new structure offers a comprehensive range of services, promoting the seamless integration of its residents into the local community".
The retirement home was "designed with top-quality materials based on quality criteria to foster a calm and harmonious living environment in a green and airy setting". The authorities added that the house was built to offer its residents "excellent exterior visibility with unobstructed views of a tranquil landscape and the Mierbaach stream".
The building was designed based on minimal energy consumption criteria, respecting ecological, economic and sustainability requirements, taking into account the summer and winter periods. With the installation of photovoltaic panels and a green roof, the building meets architectural requirements for sustainable development and reduced energy consumption, the press release continued.
Said to be "equipped with all the services required by a quality infrastructure to serve its users", the structure was reportedly designed to meet the expectations and needs of its residents. As such, sections are dedicated to social needs and gerontology, therapy, occupational therapy and physiotherapy, as well as a nursing room, meeting and relaxation rooms.
There are 201 rooms, which boast a total surface area of 26 m² and are equipped with private shower rooms. Accessibility has also been "carefully considered", allowing residents to reduce vertical movement.
The ground floor was designed to house reception areas, a restaurant, a grocery store, a hair salon and a place of contemplation opening onto outdoor terraces. Thanks to outdoor patios dedicated to walking, residents have the opportunity to spend time outdoors, thus encouraging social interaction and gatherings.
The total cost of this project is €74,400,000 (including VAT). The new seniors' home in Bascharage was completed in January 2025.
